West Haven, CT
Cost: Free
Category: Festival

The women of Palestine will be honored on International
Women's Day in West Haven this year in a special event
featuring poetry, film, history, and culture.
Celebrating Palestinian Women will take place at Wednesday,
March 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the West Haven Public Library,
300 Elm Street, West Haven.
The event is co-sponsored by the Middle East Crisis
Committee, Al-Awda CT, and the Palestinian American
Congress/CT. The event is free and the public is invited
to attend. Refreshments will be served following the
presentations. Palestinian-American poet Ahlam Shalhout,
the author of Recovering Stolen Dreams and For the Love
of My Dreams, will begin the evening with a reading
of her own and other Palestinian women's poetry.
The poetry reading will be followed by a screening of
the film Children of Shatila, a 50-minute documentary
by Palestinian director Mai Masri. The film focuses
on two Palestinian children who, 50 years after the
exile of their grandparents from Palestine, try to come
to terms with the reality of being refugees in a camp
that has survived massacre, siege, and starvation. Children
of Shatila was the official selection of the 2000 Human
Rights Watch Film Festival.
The evening will conclude with presentations by Christine
Gauvreau on the history of International Women's Day,
and by Gale Courey Toensing on Palestinian women's embroidery.
International Women's Day is celebrated all over the
world in a tradition that represents at least nine decades
of women's struggle for equality, justice, peace, and
development. The day is commemorated in the United Nations
and celebrated as national holiday in many countries
as a national holiday.

These
three-hour group sessions will offer techniques for
eliminating old patterns and reinforcing new ones, anger
management and time designated for individual creative
expression in any form of attendee's choice, in a non-judgmental
environment. You will be provided with a 'blueprint'
of your new life.
In order to be effective
at anything we do we must first empower ourselves. True
power comes from within and NEVER from without. By directing
attention to the present moment of 'NOW' which circumvents
the mind and the ego, we can eliminate all blockages
FROM THE PAST. Attendees will experience more spiritual
rather than cerebral sessions which require less linear
time but more attention to the present.
Words are known to have
power. These sessions will involve the use of poetry
spoken with intent to conjure imagery for use in creative
expression, without judgment. Ahlam Shalhout will read
from her books Recovering Stolen Dreams and For
The Love Of My Dreams to stimulate creative expression.

The Warrior Within: Self-Empowerment Through Creative
Expression
@Long Island Sound
On a Beach in CT

Category: Workshop

Me
This workshop is for everyone,
including those who believe they have no artistic talents.
It is also for artists of all media (dramatists, dancers,
musicians, writers, visual artists, etc.) This 2-hour
workshop includes breathing exercises, meditation and
time designated for individual creative expression of
choice, in a non-judgmental environment.
Words are known to have power. Words that appear instantaneously
in rhythm and verse (such as the poems from Recovering
Stolen Dreams) have further power in catalyzing creativity.
This workshop will illustrate the use of poetry spoken
with intent to conjure imagery for use in creative expression,
without judgment.
In order to be effective
at anything we do we must first empower ourselves. True
power comes from within and NEVER from without. We either
take the necessary steps to empower ourselves or we
will remain powerless. While those who do not own their
own power must rely on the domination of others, self-empowered
beings enjoy sovereignty through dominion and communion
with all aspects of themselves. The steps for achieving
one's own power involve self-awareness and awakening,
both of which are achieved through self-discipline.
The emotional body is
directly linked with the spiritual body. For as long
as we are living in the past, we rob ourselves of our
power to live in the present which is the space in time
over which we have control in shaping our circumstances.
We are so much more than all the events of our past.
Our visions of the future are limited by our past regrets.
Our creative space exists in the fertile soil of our
present moment. In order to be in the 'NOW', we must
be willing to discipline the mind from its babbling
brook adventures. When we make peace with our story,
we're willing to live in peace with everyone else.
Artist block is nothing but the captivity of creativity
in the maze and craze of the mind and ego in past or
future time. By directing attention to the present moment
(The sacred NOW) which circumvents the mind and the
ego, we can eliminate all blockages to creativity. Inner
peace extends outwardly to all.
