Review - 6/13/03 - RECORE @ KAMP'S "BANDS THAT
ROCK" SERIES
Local punk/modern rock
fusion 3 piece, Recore, played two bursting 40 minute
sets on Wednesday night as part of Club Kamp's "Bands
That Rock" local music showcase. Many fateful Zoners
and newcomers alike enjoyed series opener Jenn Kitten's
performance last Wednesday. Aside from the lack of good
lighting which slightly obscured the view of the band,
the show went off with out a hitch. The "garage
band that just needs a break" feeling flowed through
Kamp's front lounge. Due to it's intimate atmosphere,
fans are welcomed to get up close and personal with
the artists. This kind of set up helps strengthen the
bond between the band and the crowd.
I had some preconceived
notions and high expectations of Recore's live show
after I visited the band's web site (www.recorerocks.com)
and previewed some tightly recorded tracks from the
yet to be released L.P. "In the Bridge." I
get this whole new "millennium version of The Police"
vibe from their sound. Very catchy and tight, yet interesting
and vocally thought provoking. All my expectations were
blown away! Performance wise, these guys just love to
play. It's refreshing these days to find a band that
still likes to have fun. Older material pulled off of
Recore's previously released E.P. fit in perfectly with
brand spanking new tracks like "Escape" from
the upcoming full length release "In The Bridge."
This blazin' new cut has hit single written all over
it.
Recore's live show tradition
of bringing up a member of the crowd to be guest vocalist
on their Blink 182 cover of "Dammitt" was
a crowd pleasing highlight. In the second set, Recore
pulled off a perfect Jimmy Eat World cover. I had to
check the stage just to make sure it wasn't a CD playing
in the background. This edition of Kamp's Band's that
Rock was well worth the cheap date price of 4 bucks.
Check out Recore again when they open up for local fan
fav's Slugworth on Wednesday, the 25th

I give this rockin' good time 4 out 5.

- Enter The Matrix Sells Over a Million!
Atari's Enter the Matrix
rocked the sales charts. The game's publisher sent out
a press release today claiming that over one million
copies of Shiny Entertainment's action game were sold
in America and Europe after a week on the shelves, making
it the number-one video game for the past week. Matrix
directors Larry and Andy Wachowski are gonna rake in
the dough on this multi-media investment. According
to documents made public as part of Larry's divorce
proceedings, the brothers will receive $2.75 million
plus royalties from Atari for their work on EtM.
This is surprising news
to gamers who have kept up with the less then impressive
reviews by the gaming press so far. Clearly we have
a case of a great promotional campaign overcoming not-so-great
game problems.
I found the controls a bit sluggish during heavey combat
moments and there was never enough juice in the focus
meter to pull off the cool matrix moves. Finger fumbling
all day. The one hour of exclusively filmed scenes which
mirror events from MATRIX RELOADED provided tid bits
of much needed story info redeemed this game for me.
Seeing plot lines unfold from Niobi's and Ghost's perspective
was a cool twist.
Even with these stellar
merits, at the end of the day most gamers will find
using the cheat options(full juice meter, etc.) provides
more fun.
Enter the Matrix is available for the PC, PS2, Xbox
and GameCube right now in the U.S. and Europe.
I give this game 3 out of 5.
