The Human Pixel Project
@Three Columns Gallery

10 Cowperthwaite Street
Cambridge, MA
Cost: Free
Category: Visual Art
Contact: www.HumanPixelProject.net
This is the debut of the Human Pixel Project, developed
by Peter Smuts. The Human Pixel Project is a collaborative
art project, open to anyone, made up of thousands of
2x2 inch works in all mediums from hundreds, and eventually
thousands, of artists. Over 400 artists and over 3000
pixels so far. These thousands of pixels are continuously
used and re-used as elements in larger, aggregate works,
now in physical form by me but eventually by anyone
interested in digitally assembling new works from the
inventory of pixel images soon available on this site.
The autonomous works of hundreds of unrelated individuals
therefore become the underlying palate and medium of
future creations by other artists, each pixel engaged
in a continual process of formation and reformation
as a component of a larger whole, existing always as
both an expression of an individual vision and as a
element of a larger, itself temporary and contingent,
whole. This process of assembling new works from th!
e pixels is a fundamental element of the project and
extends its core idea, namely that of a democracy of
artistic creation defined by a collective willingness
to participate in an effort that transcends the individual
and to discover through that process new modes of expression
and new understandings about what it means to be a creator,
viewer, and 'consumer' of art.
So far, the participating artists are from the U.S.,
Canada, England, Ireland, France, Holland, Serbia, Romania,
Australia, Argentina, and Mexico.

a series of murals that explore the stories and lives
of people throughout North Philadelphia.
This mural has been made possible through a generous
donation from the Hispanic Association of Contractors

The Latino American culture is rich, vast and varies
from country to country. This is an exhibition whose
principal objective is to promote a rich cultural exchange
between these countries through color, texture, and
movement. This is a combination of artists born in Venezuela
and Latino American artists that one way or another
have been influenced by the Venezuelan
or Latino cultures.
Today the United States has become a point of geographical
convergence, and through this exhibit the artists use
their creative languages to visually mold their nostalgic
memories with which they live day by day.
The music, language and foods are only a few of the
aspects that continue bringing together these Latino
artists, as immigration, exile, invasion of space, freedom
of speech, violence, and globalization are also significant.
These new aspects adopted miles away from the native
lands are used as common points of intersection between
the artists and viewers.
Artists include:
Mirian Alennis
Pablo Alvarez
Fabiola Alvarez-Yurcisin
Jose Aragon
Nilton Cardenas

"People of color have some distinctive concerns
with issues of sexual identity," founder of the
group, Rachel Robbins explains. "Sometimes it's
a struggle to reconcile a cultural identity with a queer
identity, and they feel that they have to choose one
over another. Students might not feel comfortable discussing
those issues either in an LGBT group that's predominantly
white, or a group of students with similar cultural
backgrounds that deals primarily with issues of race
or ethnicity. So people end up being a lot more secretive
than they need to be."
We will be featuring the visual art of Cuban-American
artist, Tamara Diaz, who will
be available for discussion.

exploring the Afro-Caribbean festival traditions also
known as Carnavale, Mardi Gras and Rah-Rah.
Free and open to the public, the exhibit runs Jan. 12
through Feb. 25, 2005. A reception will be held on Jan.
28 from 4 to 8 p.m. featuring live music and dance performances

Campus gallery is located at 80 Washington St. and is
open Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday
and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed

The Carnivale celebration developed from a combination
of a pre-Lenten Christian festival and European pre-Christian
(pagan) traditions that were blended with African and
indigenous tribal rituals. The celebration was further
transformed in the Diaspora with traditional ritual
elements from the Caribbean, South and Central America
to become a colorful, masked, costumed, musical dance
celebration.
The exhibit includes photographs, paintings, sculpture,
masks, costumes, musical instruments and artifacts from
the following local and international artists. The cultural
areas of their works presented are noted in parenthesis:
Astrid of Greenville (Cuba), Jean Claude Blanc of Haiti
(Haiti), Stephen L. Cabral of New Bedford, Mass. (New

La Colectiva presents: Noches de Arte en El Barrio,
awarded the 2003 Best New Cultural Event in Philadelphia
by City Paper. An article in Philadelphia Weekly recently
stated, This area, knowns as the "Golden Block--
becomes a festive corridor where street musicians set
the mood while painters, photographers, authors and
poets showcase their wares." Carmen Febo, executive
director of Latino cultural center Taller Puertorriqueño,
says "Arts Nights in the Barrio is modeled after
Old City's First Friday. The idea is to use the arts
as a magnet to bring people together to experience the
Latin community." In November we continue with
very accomplished artists in there own right: Marta
Sanchez (Texas), Cesar Viveros (Mexican Muralist), Taiwan
Martinez (Venezuela), Tamara Diaz, Lucas Rivera, Francisco
Garcia, Leticia Roa-Nixon (Mexico City), Ruby Pacheco
and Juan Gutierrez. Each artist will display their work
at a different location along the premiere Latino business
corridor El Centro de Oro Business and Cultural
Arts District located along West Lehigh Avenue
between Mascher Street to the east and 6th Street to
the West and along the North 5th Street between Lehigh

Democracy Hangs in the Balance
@Social and Political Art Resource Center
Venice, CA
Online Exhibit
Cost: Free
Category: Visual Art
Contact: www.SparcMurals.org
Our environment is saturated with cultural meaning.
In the information society, images and ideas are constantly
being generated in every sector, from every perspective.
Some of these have the power to awaken outrage, such
as the pictures of abuse at the Abu Ghraib Prison. Tremendous
effort is expended by the powers-that-be to spin, disguise
and discredit information that might call existing arrangements
and policy into question. Our aim is to fight back.
This exhibit calls on artists to take part in the discourse,
using our expressive powers and social imagination to
focus attention on what wrongs must be made right and
to suggest how positive change may be accomplished thoughtfully
and creatively.
In this exhibit, artists share images, music, videos,
scripts, and ideas to help increase awareness, freedom,
democracy and justice in US society. These activists
make effective use of creative imagery, action and imagination
in moblizing awareness and participation towards social
action.
In this online exhbit, Tamara Diaz exhibits 6 photographs
taken in Mexico and the US. www.SparcMurals.org

"Snap To Grid"
@Los Angeles Center for Digital Art
5723 Melrose, Suite 202
Los Angeles, CA
Cost: Free
Category: Visual Art
Contact: www.Lacda.com
Opening Reception Thursday September 9, 7-9pm
Gallery Statement:
The Los Angeles Center
For Digital Art decided to launch an international experiment
where artists upload images that are printed and hung
by the gallery. The hundreds of works are displayed
in a grid like installation (reminiscent of postcard
art shows of the 1980's) where every work submitted
is exhibited. The usual (less than democratic) selection
process where only the precious few are chosen is turned
on its head in a curatorial anarchy where everyone gets
to participate and the viewer is literally left to be
the judge. The show represents a snapshot of a current
moment in art history when digital imaging has reached
the hands of the many, an age where culture belongs
to the "mobblogers" around the globe. From
Thailand to Texas, amateur to academic, beautiful to
banal and beyond the monumental quantity and variety
of "Snap to Grid" becomes an aesthetic experience
where each individual piece adds to an agglomerative
effect that has a life of its own.
